Definitely some remnants of the awful news Disco rear end too. Shirley this can’t become a trend.

Ah I see what you’re saying. Sorry. Definitely crossed over the initial Mk6 point. I was the proud owner of a Mk6 GTI from new. A friend had a Mk6 R. I definitely thought the R was a good bit quicker. Having driven the new R though, it’s definitely a way better car as you said.

And... the difference between the Mk7 GTI and R in hp is 82, or 72 if you have the performance pack. I’ve not see too many GTI tunes that add 45% power...

This whole article and thread is regarding the Mk7 ;)

I reckon they are selling fairly well based on anecdotal evidence (seeing them around, seeing one in a Dan Balzerian video etc). They are the newest flaunt your wealth vehicle so... there is a market for these things! And the reviews have been pretty positive.

Love both but if you put a map on the R it’s going to kick the GTI again. Compare apples with apples. Plus putting power through four wheels as opposed to two will generally yield better traction. It would be a close run thing off the line between a stock r and a tuned GTI.

The DSG R is almost 1.5s faster than the GTI to 62mph. VW quote 5.1s but it can routinely do 4.6 versus GTI 5.9/6.1. Even the heralded club sport GTI is much slower off the mark due to 2WD. If you can’t feel that difference, you’re probably dead. The euro spec 2017 golf R with slightly more extra power... may do more.

Yeah, well... international readership! ;) And in NA there is a tendency to call the current year the next year. Like, isn’t the current Camaro the 2018 model or similar?

It’s not so bad ;)

Makes sense.... not much worth crowing about with this supposed MY17 then.

Is this really an MY17 car then? VW have updated the Golf and the R will get a power hike and new interior bits, new screens etc. Maybe this will be the MY18 car in NA....

Plus aside from the front it’s basically an Audi Q7. Profile is identical.

$500k in Australia ;)

It’s really no different to Audi, or BMW, or Mercedes, or any other number of lux/premium manufacturers. The Q5 has been a huge seller for Audi. Why wouldn’t JLR want a bigger piece of that? No idea why this is harder to get.

To add, the differences also go beyond looks and interiors. Eg there’s no SVR Discovery, no 5.0 V8 in the Discos either. The lower end engines TDV6, SD4 etc are available across both though.

RRs are definitely the more upmarket brand. Land Rovers feel cheaper inside. Sit in an Evoque, then sit in a discovery sport. Clear relation but the evoque is way nicer. It’s not too dissimilar to the gap between an Audi and a Skoda/Seat.

Yep the car at RRP was probably AU$350-500k on the road at least. “Luxury car tax” adds 33% to any dollars over ~$65k for a car like this. It’s just one thing that adds huge expense. For example, a Ferrari 488, or Aston DB11, are $600k and $500k respectively.

Harley who? Oh, you mean Harley DaviDson you chump bag. Get to the back of the queue.
