Free from criticism is not the same thing as being officially sanctioned by a university for something you said in a private conversation.

Nobody is saying they should be free from criticism. The question raised in the OP is whether it’s the school’s place to adjudicate personal communications among students.

That's a pretty dumb idea of what constitutes private.

This was not a “crowded” place. It was private text messages. A public university is bound by the 1st Amendment.

Don’t promote child sex and don’t escort while being a PR agent for a corporation. Is that so hard?
