I'd argue that it only got decent reviews because its novelty of being the first gathering of many Zelda characters in one game, it's one huge fan service, a mindless and shallow one, but a fan service nonetheless.

I called it. It looked like it's going to be shallow, repetitive and unpolished, pretty much like any other Dynasty Warriors game. So many entries and spin offs and none of them has their own identity, they're all the same game with different coats of paint:
