What you’re doing is a normal shutdown and start up. The power/home button method that achosid describes is a forced restart. Think of it like pressing the reset button on your computer, when your computer still had a reset button.
And the crunch it makes when doing it is so satisfying. :)

I can’t get over having to say “Ok, Google...” to activate it. I know that sounds silly, but it’s far easier, to me, to be able to say “Computer, lights on.” like I can with Alexa.

No. The remote is a an RF remote to the HUB only, and the HUB then sends IR signals to your devices.
