Oooo! I remember this one and it’s one of my favorites. I love “not deer” stories! Seeing the uncanny valley out in nature is so unsettling.

This last paragraph is horrifying. Probably someone who knew the history of ghosts and spooks that decided that they could get away with it as it would be ignored as being “haunted” or more likely, chalked up to drugs or alcohol.
