I think there is a tendency to read too much into the church’s past actions to point out their hypocrisies and to rationalize them to ourselves in a secular, political lens.

Last I checked, it was pretty basic Catholic dogma that abortion is murder. By that logic, anyone who votes for a pro-choice Democrat is supporting child murder. Denying absolution to people who unapologetically support the legalization of literal child murder actually seems pretty tame to me.
