I'm probably being cynical, but I suspect more sports car purchases by are made based on image and bullet points on a Powerpoint to drop at the bar rather than anything else. Making and selling sizzle is a lot easier than creating a perfect steak.

I recently learned that technology of model planes has gotten good enough that there are some you can fly from a first person view. Like, on a hobbyist budget - quick mental math adds up to under $1k for everything. You have to be willing to look like the King of the Nerds, but pretty amazing stuff.
