He was dehydrated, starving, exhausted and is a generally delusional man. Him not acting sane in that moment made perfect sense because that's his character.
That wasn't the script not trusting us, it was just a character moment. She was explaining an awkward but secretly deeply hurtful event in her life, and it revolved around a dumb pun. It made perfect sense she would over-explain that when reciting the story. I do that sort of thing all the time
They do put it in youtube, and if you don't like the concept you have no obligation to stay in the theatre for them? I don't understand what you're complaining about.
