I'd go with ham-handed for the social critique, but gentle, even delicate for the love story and the suspense.  It's a good movie.

Well deserved Best Actor award.  I think his character is how a lot of WWII vets saw themselves — tough, cynical, and utterly patriotic.

Late to this game, but I heard Brad Bird or Lasseter.  I think Disney will be hesitant to give this to anyone who is not proven to (a) be insanely creative and (b) make them one meelleeeon dollars.
