I usually go to Japan every 2 years or so as a tourist, half the time by myself and half the time spending time with local friends I’ve made over the years. I feel like a lot of these issues have lessened in the last few years.

Parts of it are a little sad-ish, but everything ends up on a positive note with no negative consequences, so you’re safe there.

Most tracking services place the cost of living index of Tokyo about the same as NYC.
