I think a lot of the objection is that the word “rebel” juxtaposed with “slave” wouldn’t have the same meaning for a non-American. To American ears, it sounds like, “I would rather be a Confederate soldier than a slave,” but it doesn’t have that context elsewhere.

Also Mary Wollstonecraft who wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman considered marriage to be slavery. It’s not the same as being taken from your home, sold and shipped to a foreign country to work for no money but it did involve being passed a property from one man to another.

Americans really do think they’re the centre of the universe.

fwiw, it was a quote from a British suffragette so she probably didn’t...all Americans are rebels in British eyes ;)

Great! But in the vast scheme of things it’s nothing. As I said, every single human ever was born. It happens tens of thousands of times a day.

Not really, as everyone ever was born. It’s actually very mundane and ordinary.

I feel so fucking bad for Nicole Kidman. I cannot even imagine the pain she must have felt losing her children to a cult. She was smart enough to get herself out, but it looks like it was too late for her kids and that is so fucking tragic. I’m sure the bullshit propaganda that Scientology spins about her is heinous.

I know Rihanna is kind of like an idol around these parts, but there’s really no anger at all about her calling Rachel Dolezal a hero? Not even a snarky comment? I’m a little surprised by how it’s all about her upcoming album rather than her statements about Dolezal. Unless it was sarcasm that went way over my head

I feel the same way about Donald Trump, which is why even though he will end the world in a nuclear war if he becomes president, i will vote for him, just because of how many people will lose their fucking minds if he won

I think it’s the fact that the Kardashians are inconsequential and yet have been elevated to their current status by the masses that makes people upset. It makes me upset. If the masses find these assholes even mildly entertaining, then the masses have a laughably, pathetically low intellectual stimulation threshold.

Uh nope. Spaniards are indeed Hispanic, where as not all Latinos are. Latin refers to being from Latin America where as Hispanic are people from a country that speaks Spanish which would include Spain (the word actually comes from Hispania which was a Roman word for the whole of the Iberian peninsula) but not Brazil

Actually, yes they are. That’s the primary difference between “Hispanic” and “Latino.” Latino is a subset of Hispanic. Hispanic also includes people from the Iberian peninsula.

I always thought it was a fairly substantial percentage? (But that comes from a friend who is half Filipino. Maybe within his family and social circle there is a disproportionately large amount of Spanish heritage.)

Eh the term Latin/Hispanic is a US centric label. I never understood the need to lump all people together based on a shared geographical and linguistic basis. The label doesn’t take into account the very different nationalities, ethnicities and races that occupy the “Latino" label...a label mind you that not many

This happens fairly frequently, doesn't it? Or do I just fly a lot?

According to the link, it’s “Los Damaso”, not “Los Damas”. More important since “Damas” is a word in Spanish.

Well, obviously launching a physical assault on any business is not constructive, but I think the resentment long time residents might feel about a place that is clearly intended to serve the people pricing them out of their homes is understandable and not entirely unfair, independently owned or not. Those businesses

““Beat Makeup, she explained, is all about “beating that face!”

Narcissism at its best.. Sometimes I wish I lived in a country where taking selfies is considered unhealthy. Be natural. Be yourself. Staring at yourself in your camera is bad for your well being.

The war thing always baffled me, especially when they brought Selective Service into the mix. I was not aware fealty to the military-industrial complex was such a central tenet of feminism before MRAs shoutsplained it to me.
