That SHAY sounds too anglicized to me. I would say: boo-SHEH-mee. Longer, flatter "eh" sound.

Not untrue by any means. I am a Spaniard currently working as a translator at an international agency. My French, Italian, Romanian, Portuguese, Brazilian and Mexican colleagues all call themselves Latinos. It isn't just the language. We have common cultural traits that are different from our non-Latin colleagues.

Best answer so far! ;)

I think you are talking about two different things here though. In the US, Latino is most often used to described people who come from Latin America. Internationally, that is not the case. That's the issue. To many people, the label "Latino" seems like a random imposition.

Yes, yes and yes. There is so much privilege in being a prostitute/porn actor by choice.

Very well said.

No college degree should be worth $100,000 in debt. Seriously. My suggestion? Learn a foreign language and go study abroad. Germany, Denmark, France, Belgium, Spain.. they all have great universities, most of them are free (or you pay a very small fee), you learn a foreign language and get to know another culture.

I don't really understand the point of this discussion. There is no such thing as one widely accepted definition of "pretty", so who gets to claim who is beautiful and who is not? I think all the girls quoted in the article are keeping it real. I certainly can't claim I am unquestionably pretty.

Uff. That is actually highly debatable. Most Spaniards are white, with the exception perhaps of certain minorities like the Roma who have been living in the Iberian peninsula for centuries.

Ha! I was always great at sports. My teacher's favorite in almost everything: soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field, etc. But baseball/softball? I could never hit the ball. Never. It just never happened. I can still see my teacher look at me right in the eye, like saying, "come on, I know you can do it!" and

Yup. Sums her up pretty nicely.

Pretty much (and it went on for 300 years!), so it is pretty "duh" for some people; however, if you are unfamiliar with Latin America, then it can be a surprising fact. British colonies and Spanish colonies were very different in that sense, that's why a lot of people have a hard time understanding the genetic make up

"Provincial" is misused here, but Diana Spencer was not sophisticated or fashionable at all when she married Prince Charles. Yes, she was upper class and a blue blood, but she was no "it girl". She was a very shy and sheltered girl who had no idea how to deal with the attention, and on top of that, she had an awful

A lot of people seem to be pretty shocked to discover that there are white Latinos or are surprised to know that most people in Latin America are actually mixed- so yeah, not so "duh" after all.

Fun fact: a few years ago, researches in Mexico did an extensive study on the human genome in that country in order to predict/analyze the most common health traits and trends in the population. Turns out, 80% of the population has a high genetic coincidence with the genome found in Southern Europe. Meaning: Mexicans

Oh Jenna, I love you and I respect the work behind this report, but as a Latina, can you please drop the term and other variations such as white/non-white Latina, etc.?

This is exactly why this study doesn't make sense to me ^

Heh :) I understood your first post as meaning just that (another phil major, woohoo!) but yeah, I guess most people think materialism = bling

I need a really good puking gif but the ones I have are just not good enough to describe what I am feeling right now...
