That was its original design. IIRC after the Cole bombing, they modified the system so that it can target boats directly. I don’t know if it can do that automatically or if it needs human intervention (which would be problematic if it meant overriding the air defense role).

This has to be the most millennial answer ever. You think headphones didn’t come along until the iPod? You know there were discman and walkman waaaay before the iPod, right? And way before 1994.

Lack of engine noise has been an issue since headphones (portable) became a thing. So at this point, it just feels like a culling of the herd if you’re not paying attention.
