I’m picking up the pieces right now from this exact situation. Guy retired, chose not to document anything for years. But the employer also knew well in advance said employee quit documenting everything long ago, was going to retire and did nothing to fix or prepare for the situation.

This isn’t just common for some IT jobs, but with many skilled blue collar positions also. Many of these positions don’t seem very valuable to a companies bottom line and they continually “roll the dice” thinking this won’t happen to them.

Pretty sure accidental drownings are the #1 killer of kids under 4. Car accidents may be close. I spent 4 years terrified this might happen to my son. Wouldn’t wish this happening to my worst enemy, ever.
