Sideways is a great film. I have always felt that "sideways" referred to the way that the two main characters' lives were going.

I'm glad you brought up The Straight Story, which I thought was a terrific film. Richard Farnsworth was dying of cancer and barely finished the movie (he killed himself not long after), but you could see that he poured every ounce of himself into the Alvin Straight character. His Oscar nod was well deserved.
