I don't think AoS is trying to do too many things and becoming "neither fish nor fowl". It's just fowl.
I once trollingly predicted that Chicago Fire would beat AoS this year. Last night CF pulled a 2.2 and AoS pulled a 2.0.

The season opener was actually very unsubtle about showing "Ezekiel" introducing himself to angels who never actively recognized him. So that's at least one Supernatural twist that was properly foreshadowed and built up.
Ratings took a nose dive this week (much worse than Bones now), so at least we'll be spared those plots in the future.
