I read ALL these back in the day, and the one thing I remember is that Jack Ryan was a total plot device. He was devoid of personality, not an “everyman”, and the books were better for it. He served the story. Jack Ryan wasn’t the star of the story, the machine was, and that’s why the movies didn’t work.
