Whoa, this is unexpected. Spanfeller is the herbiest of herbs.
They shouldn’t have written all those sports stories.
I started on Jez, got my star on Gawker from Denton himself after I made a dick joke I’ve long forgotten but Deadspin is the only one that stuck. I barely knew anything about sports before I started reading here but Drew’s columns sucked me in because they DIDN’T stick to sports so were very accessible to Boner…
And P.S. to Jim Spanfeller, not only are you losing my Deadspin pageviews (which were numerous, I assure you), but my Kotaku ones, as well as occasional timid ventures out into the badlands of Jalopnik, Gizmodo, and Jezebel. Congrats! Your strategy to boost ad views is working swimmingly!
Wow! I can comment on an article!
Sorry, gotta get one long comment in before they shut off the lights:
It’s been a hell of a decade for me on this site. It’ll be sorely missed, and the muscle memory to not type Deadspin in my address bar is going to take years to break.
I’ve been a regular here since 2006. My social circle doesn’t really allow many opportunities to talk sports so I treasured that this was THE place that allowed for my dumbass jokes and ridiculous takes to be heard (and even then, there were better comments made by better people).
Posted this gif on Greenwell’s tweet about no more staff, but seems appropos here as well. Best of luck to you all. Thanks for the bears, Diana. You did great!
I would 100% pay for Deadspin, Kotaku, TheTakeout, and Splinter. I’ve never paid for access to media in my life.
Ha! Your self-deprecating reveal cracked me up.
I’m not a regular Deadspin visitor (though I’ve always supported from afar until now), but io9, Jezebel, and The Root are my daily mainstays and I’d fight for them and the whole Giz family until my last breath. There are so few “fun” journalism sites left, especially ones that are so encouraging of their readership.…
UnDead Spin!
It’s one of the few things I would add to my monthly expenses. Deadspin and io9 keep me sane at work.
I would 100% pay a subscription fee for a former Gawker/Gizmodo media group of sites free from private equity bullshit.
About four or five times this morning I habitually hit ctrl-t, then typed dea and hit enter for the autocomplete, just to go see what Deadspin had to say. This has been the one and only sports website for me SIMPLY BECAUSE it wasn’t bland recaps of a game with sports reporting interviews like “so, did you give 110…
Yeah, I’d also gladly pay to access Deadspin. Splinter getting shut down was a major letdown for me, but losing Deadspin too is going to be gut-punch level.
I suspect a lot of us would express similar sentiments. I don’t want my ad revenue going to Great Hill any more, but I also have an incredibly hard time letting go of Deadspin and the writers I love. Hoping the next few days will present a better course of action for the commentariat crew
“I believe everything...and I believe nothing. I suspect everyone...and I suspect no one.” That and “Do not trifle with me, Monsieur. I am skilled in karate... My hands are lethal weapons!” were my go-to.
