He was probably thinking of the variable valve timing. Mazda’s equivalent to the VTEC at that time.
The reason is marketing, usually.
On SAABs it’s been that way since they came out with the APC knock sensors in the early ‘80s. Higher octane, less knock, more ignition advance, little more power.
That Cadillac had a 4.5 liter V8. No V6 available that year. It was also front-drive. Just like the Focus.
