I guess in their mind it is a way of creating more 3 dimensional characters that still have their own flaws even if they are badass heroes at heart. But I agree with you, it did not feel organic, it felt forced and artificial, and really did not suit her overall temperament or the situation they are in.

It was a big relief that this episode finally gave us a break from the psychotic brutality of Negan, and the resulting abject misery and humiliation it brought to our group of erstwhile heroes.
I'm trying to imagine a suitable demise for Negan and finding genuine delight in it, so I guess I have to admit that as much
