Perhaps Monolith is being dodgy on this on purpose to keep some parts of the game a mystery. In the age where every little game secret can be found within hours or days of a games release, having a mystery like this, while at times can be infuriating, it also adds challenge and mystique to the game.

Alpha Centauri was 'just a reskin' of Civ II. It's also the best strategy game ever made. Atmosphere matters a lot, and if Beyond Earth can replicate the magic of it's predecessor, then it'll be well worth the price.
