“People would ask me in a roundabout way, ‘So are you?’ And I would say ‘What?’ And they’d say ‘What does your name mean?’ And I would say ‘Do you mean Whoopi?’ And they’d say ‘No, the other name.’ And then they would say ‘Come on, are you Jewish?’ And I always say ‘Would you ask me that if I was white? I bet not.’”…
I posted this in another comment, but I think the author lays out a pretty iron clad argument on why it’s not the same.
Gender identity is routed in the brain, race is pure social construct with the only biological thing being literally the skin tone and maybe some slight facial features.
Remember that Muslim lady who couldn’t get an unopened can of Coke on a plane because the flight attendant was worried she’d use it as a weapon? Meanwhile, Conrad Hilton gets caught smoking weed in an airplane bathroom, threatens to kill a flight attendant, and gets off with community service.
she makes it look good
Would it surprise you to learn that Tilda Swinton was made of pure sunshine?
NOT THE SAME
I bet y’all would be LOVING this if Amy Schumer made the same joke.
I dunnoooooo guys, this is not really worth it. I’m not even a comedian and I would have had a difficult time not saying something similar after a professional interviewer said the phrase “inside an 11 year old girl.” If anything he should be dinged for saying something so dumb. I didn’t see it as a joke so much as…
He lobbed a jaw-dropping double entedre at a comedian; this is not a joke she manufactured about child abuse, it was ripping how clumsily he put it. I’m not a fan of hers but nor am I reaching for my pearls on this one. Outrage level: meh.
I know this wasn’t the point of your post, but has this even seen All in the Family? I mean... does he get what that show was all about?
The pause between Stephanopoulous’s awkward phrasing and her reply is the most interesting part of it for me. She picked up on the potential for making a joke, fought her instincts a little, but she gave in to them. I forgive her for taking us all there, and put 30% of the responsibility on him.
Right, her joke is pointing out the awkwardness of the phrase “inside this 11-year-old girl” and clarifying that it should not interpreted as “child abuse.” It's not a child abuse joke; it's a joke about something that might sound like child abuse but isn't.
I mean, this was basically a “That’s what she said" joke. It's not really offensive in any way.
“Chandler: Because we love kids. Love them to death. Well, not actually to death. That’s just a figure of speech. We love kids the appropriate amount... as allowed by law.”
“typical Massachusetts wannabe stereotypical redneck bigot”??
I agree with your point - I fail to understand how these people so comprehensively miss the point of the whole book they are huffing and puffing their whole lives away to abide with.
Footnote: I am aware its pretty contentious to say that particular book has a point, but as a set of guidelines on how to live, I think…
