I’m betting no one else will recommend this, but get a Chevy Sonic, with the 1.4l turbo, 6-speed, hatchback. I had a 2012 model, and absolutely loved it- did most of my driving on WV 2-lanes. Great handling, easy/cheap maintenance- perhaps not the cache of the VW- but a thoroughly enjoyable experience!
