I'm not sure I understand why Lewis planned to learn to fly and then get to Tokyo. He would have to fly a small plane along the Pacific rim with no operating infrrastructure. He might plot out airfields to land at along the way, but he has no way of knowing if they are intact, have fuel, etc.
