Ive always associated it AWD = always on, 4WD selectable. It was re-enforced by my wrangler that has a 4wd light when the transfer case is moved.

AWD is mostly FWD with RWD assist and is always on. 4WD requires a transfer case and is manually started/stopped. All 4 wheels move at the same time (at least in an open diff)
