I had that same Britney moment one day when I was about 10 or 12, home sick, listening to Top 40 radio and this awful song 'Holiday' came on every four hours. I remember thinking if never heard this Madonna person ever again it'd be too soon.

I think we are actually agreeing on pretty much everything. I'm not calling the wildlings colonists. Just saying if we are putting that label on anyone, it fits them better than Westeros. The point being to illustrate why I think the review's analogy was lazy.
The only natives I know about from the books are the Giants and Children. Ok, there are a few Giants there but the vast majority of the army are people, who presumably, like Mance, chose to go live there. And I think after living in Westeros for 10,000 years or whatever it is, they lose that "colonial" label.
Quite. They're not a colonial power either. But they're closer to being one than Westeros is.
I guess that overstated it but the ranging and murdering goes both ways and my point remains that the colonial power analogy is not a good one.
"…layers that reframe the Wildlings as a local army repurposed by a colonizing power to fight a war they want no part of."
Future AVQ&A topic!
Pixies, In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song).
I'll probably be slated for this, but here goes-I think the live version of Atmosphere on Les Bains Douches blows away the studio version. https://m.youtube.com/watch…
All things being equal I guess I'd prefer to read the book before I watched the show but I don't really get the hysteria. Reading the books first didn't spoil the show for me; why would seeing the show first spoil the books? I speak as a reader since 1998, one who enjoyed reading the books more the *second* time…
"Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea."
How about Rick? Sends the love of his life on her way to be with her husband, while he fights nazis and….owns his own bar!
Jean-Luc Picard. The ultimate renaissance man.
I was in a park once a few years ago with my wife and our two little kids who were playing like madmen when a little boy their age came up who looked nothing so much like Richie Rich-$50 haircut, $500 clothes, $100 shoes. His dad followed him and was pushing the $1200 stroller and wearing $1000 clothes and sporting a…
If you thought that, then you'll really love The Last Battle.
The song is about moving on and looking back at the past fondly but without regret. To her, her degree represented a new path she'd chosen over, and instead of, me. But thank-you for repeating a smidgen of the bafflement I felt at the time; I had to listen to the lyrics a few times before I pieced it together! …
Green Day-Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). I was on the phone one day with my long distance gf of 5+ years a few months after she'd moved away to go back to school in another city. We were just chatting about our days when I mentioned how much I hated this terrible song they kept playing at the gym. I didn't know…
Upvoted for bringing back the memory of a University girlfriend (who was black) indicting my entire record collection (which consisted mainly of Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, the Cure and yes, some Smiths) as "anemic white-boy music". Great burn and I still remember the beautiful smile she had when…
Not comparing the music; I meant that in 1991 I hated TLM so much I thought Pixies were deliberately releasing something substandard to get out of a contract. The album title also means "Trick/Cheat/Fool the World". Boy was I ever young and intolerant.
You would especially choose Surfer Rosa if it had Come On Pilgrim tacked on the end at no extra charge, as was the case on the CDs being issued in the late 80s. I never understood that-it seemed like a terrible deal for the band. I'd've bought anything they released-didn't they want to make money?!
