That's a great point. At first, fans wanted his head, and certain other people wanted him to shut up. He did what he thought was right, in an era when that could easily get you fired. Now, most of society has caught up with him. Because he was a leader.
I should acknowledge that John Thompson also offered very forceful leadership according to his values, as a coach in a more modern setting.
