Well there are lots of variables here. 1.) What's the score? If you're up 10 why give them free momentum when you could go up 2 scores without risking it? 2.) Who's your kicker? Can he hit 50 yards plus? 3.) how's your punt unit? Are they great at pinning the opponent deep? 4.) How's your defense? etc, etc,…

Once again, HUGE difference between "dancing to every whim" and screaming FUCK YOU in their faces as you lose games due to silly playcalling.

That would seem to go against the very statistics fueling this Madden-esque desire to go for tons of 4th downs. It's all about increasing your % of scoring and decreasing your opponent's. With a top notch defense and mediocre offense (Ravens, Jets, etc.) field position is HUGE into that determination.

Definitely agree for you there. But there's a huge gulf between "never punt" and "4th and 2 on opponent's 36". Plus, you can be "2010 Ravens" good where you should absolutely punt b/c you have the defense to back it up or "2009 Saints" good where you should probably always go for it within 4th and 6 or so because…
