I think it's more a matter of changing circumstances than a shift in character.  I mean, the entire pilot takes place under quite stressful conditions for our heroes; in subsequent episodes they are far less desperate.

That was exactly my thought when the film was over, that it was basically RotJ to TDK's Empire.  It's not as intense, gripping, or even as well-crafted as the middle installment, but it ties threads from its predecessors together in unexpected and resonant ways.

I agree.  I was very unsatisfied with the "he's dead" ending, to the point of preparing to start loudly proclaiming the film as critically overrated.  But then the second set of twists stepped in and made the film make sense in a completely different and more satisfying way.
