Manga has always had a lot of cases of one being really popular so its style becomes the new “norm”. That’s why it tends to be easy to guess what decade a work is from.

Oscar Wilde had the right idea: if you treat something as wicked or offensive there will always be people who find it appealing because trollishness is a thing. But if you treat it as boring and disappointing they get tired of trying to get a rise out of you.
