It’s certainly anecdotal, but I have experience with a couple that receive next to no service and run great - and have for considerably longer than I’ve been around.

I disagree. The long-distance services—the ones which hit the “red states”—lose millions, but haven’t gone away. If they could’ve cut them, they would’ve long ago.
