There are lots of reasons that there are one thousand billion distinct denominations of Christian. One of the big ones is that "prosperity gospel" you mention. The Church I grew up in finds it as much or more despicable as/than an outsider.

I would agree, but I've read precisely one of his books. And American Gods was excellent, but it was far from the best I've read this year. Don't understand the acclaim at all.
