Actually, the "probing handshake," as you describe it, is not about probing at all. It's an antidote to the "too forceful" handshake by someone else. By extending the index finger, it is virtually impossible for the other person to give you one of those palm-crushing, "I'm-over-compensating-for-something" handshakes
