with my 7 series if I am in D and click the paddle shifters it automatically goes into manual mode.  I don’t think I’ve ever moved the shifter into manual.  I haven’t tried this in my wifes M335i, but I bet it’s the same thing.  I’d much prefer this to having to manually move the shifter.
