You don’t need to speak to get by- they speak great English- when I spoke danish to them it was actually harder. My favorite place there is Akureyri, which is the second largest city. Up there the terrain is less touristy but more otherworldly- bubbling mud pits, a mini blue lagoon (Myvatn), huge volcanic craters.
