An important bit of information we need to know is whether the oil light was a service reminder, or status indicator. If the light was a “service soon” it’s one thing, but if it was indicating low pressure or levels...thats another.
Of course they knew. But they also knew that if they raised taxes to fix any of the crumbling infrastructure, they’d all lose their jobs and be raked over the coals for being freedom hating tax and spend politicians.

It will be decades before AI can drive with the skill and adaptability of a competent human driver. The nuance and complexities are nearly endless, and constant high speed unpredictable changes make autonomous piloting of a commercial aircraft look easy by comparison.
I mean, even if the steering is still physically coupled (which it is), the traction control computer still needs to know the steering angle in order to accurately model the behavior of the system (both desired, and actual), and properly do its job. Maybe the solution is to have bigger vehicles that can carry more people in one go through the tunnel. If it’s really high volume, maybe link the larger vehicles together in a chain so that they all travel at once all at the same speed.
