Rage is the only one I've read so far. The others are on my list, more to look forward to.

I’m looking forward to this one. And I thought Chester Himes did a wonderful job of painting vivid mental pictures for the reader, in A Rage in Harlem.

The Everything but the Elote spice blend is fantastic. I use a couple of tablespoons of it with a scoop of Duke’s mayo + a scoop of sour cream + a dash of Tajin, as a dip. Am also a huge fan of the take-and-bake tomato/parm foccaccia.

ETA2: I love Gatsby for the language. I love how he writes a party into existence in four short paragraphs.

Yes! And when a teacher teaches a book they love, as my World Lit/Comp teacher did for me with both Hamlet and Inferno, it can be a real spark and a gift.

I don’t doubt your experience. I had a 10th grade U.S. history teacher respond to my 2-page paper on The Graduate with (paraphrasing) “you didn’t get it.” But the difference is, SHE WAS RIGHT! She was also a great teacher. And without being remotely condescending, she talked to me a little bit — out of class,

Definite book person here. Have transitioned to a smaller home library of physical copies, with a growing Kindle collection; it’s part of my general reduction in stuff. Some I consider to be a permanent collection, but even those aren’t too sacred. And my living room furniture was all arranged around the bookcase (not

(This post got Kinja’d. The parenthetical originally ended with “But it’s true.” And that text was linked to an article about this question. Bizarre.)

Reese’s Pieces do not have chocolate. (I know! How could our palates have been fooled for so long! But it’s true.)

The Last Supper is brilliant. What a horrible and sad way for her (and others, so many, anyone) to go. She did good work.

It’s like backpfeifengesicht, but for dicks. Backpfeifenpenis?

I wonder whether that knob now has the tracking device.

Scariest movie I’ve ever seen (was maybe 8 when it aired on network television, before cable existed). So great. Nobody could play a rich-girl invalid like Barbara Stanwyck! I still think of it when I hear a train whistle anytime near 11:15pm.

I’ve been going at 6am on alternate Fridays, to shop for me and Mom both. Have been the first shopper in the door more than once. Going that early, I’m done shopping in maybe 30-40 minutes (even with a full cart, working off both our lists) and then the self-checkout is a bit slow, takes 15 mins. But I’m out well

I feel you. I keep wishing for beauty to be fully acknowledged as another type of privilege that affects SO MANY THINGS.

It’s rare that both these things are true, but you’ve found a use case.

And my axe

The only thing Cam said wrong was “I’m sorry.” Don’t apologize when you’re right!

LOL at the Simpsons-esque “translation” on Facebook:
