Focusing more on the victims would, from the media’s perspective, necessarily involve contacting people coping with shock and grief, not to mention digging up information about the dead that they are in no position to control, contextualize or refute. It’s a mass murder. Everything that flows from that is poisoned.

For what it’s worth, the same anti-bias crime provisions that might be invoked if it turns out this was somehow racially motivated, might be applicable if sex or gender was the motivation.
