If you are looking for something a little quirky and different, you can get a pretty well equipped MINI Countryman with AWD and a turbo 4 cyl. Not too big, not too small, decent mpg and the interior quality has come a long way since the last generation.

Hwy 290 is hell. Full of debris (lawn mowers), narrow lanes and over stressed business folk. The surface is close to undriveable in my, admittedly, rough riding MINI Clubman. I can only imagine what it’s like to be stranded there, in the heat, with the over stressed business folk.
