Her response someone yelled Color Purple was “Ok. I’m wrong.” 

What this article leaves out is that when she was corrected by someone in the audience member she said “Sorry, I was wrong.” Literally what she said, you can find the remarks online.

In fifty years he had a lead female in TWO movies. One was early in his career (less his choice) and the other was probably an Oscar contender before they started production. And he didn’t get the Oscar for directing for it so that was the lesson for him.
