And not all that many celebrities complain about her. They’re all in on it and friends with her. Maybe, just maybe, they don’t need us regular people to defend them and get in a huff.

No. He is getting a card in the mail that says “Jane Smith has given a gift in honor of you.” The gift is still from the person making a donation.

I have worked in fundraising for over 10 years. There is absolutely no reason not to make a give in honor of someone. Any organization will gladly accept your gift with any kind of earmark, note, or designation. I don’t where or what you read but it sounds like nonsense.
