The thing is though, some people actually cannot find a way to do it. I like Rhimes' message, but I think just ignoring the reality of some people's lives is bullshit. A person taking care of their sick parent or raising kids on a single, low salary for example might REALLY want to travel, but are prevented from

It's not clear here how the bystander who called the police was supposed to know Brooks would only be 5 minutes. A young child died in a locked car near my office a couple summers ago, and apparently people saw him but assumed the parent was on their way back and no one called the police. It's a tough situation to

Thank you for your support! My landlord is pretty responsive about this kind of stuff. She doesn't want people feeling unsafe in her building. This guy also just lives with other people- I doubt he is on the lease or pays rent. I appreciate the information and am definitely documenting everything.

I totally would have expected a Hills Have Eyes type too- I was surprised when I looked over at him. The "good" thing about the whole experience was that it was just gross rather than scary. Yay, I guess?

It's the weirdest thing any guy's ever said to me I think! He actually looked kind of preppy/fratty. I've never heard anyone else use that term and no one I've told that story to has either.

I usually respond too with shouting and telling them off, but my friends and family are always like, "That's dangerous, you might provoke them." I agree though that it's pretty satisfying!

Worst I think was the time I was getting gas and the guy next to me was like, "You have a nice turd-cutter!" and then kept telling all the other guys at the station about how great my "turd-cutter" was.

Thanks- I was kind of on the fence about talking to my landlord. I caught myself wondering, "Was it really that big of a deal?" But then I was like, Um, yeah it was! So I emailed my landlord.

I got harassed today by my neighbor, who lives across the hall from me. He's harassed me in the past (calling me baby, trying to follow me into my unit) but left me alone after I complained. Today though he seemed drunk despite it being 7am and was like, "Why are you mad with me, baby? Why don't you ever want to talk

How people get their news and information about what's going in the world and what people choose to read for entertainment are two different things.

I think people should read whatever they want as long as they're reading. Sure, it's great to read lots of different kinds of things. But if it's one genre or nothing, I vote for the former.

It's just Dubliners. I've read it and I liked it. But I also love Harry Potter. That's the beauty of books. You can read lots of them. You don't have to limit yourself. And you sure as shit don't have to try to limit other people.

I read all kinds of books, including YA, but I don't think it's weird and sad when adults read YA exclusively, because it's better than not reading at all. Reading is awesome. Everyone should do it!

I just read Graham's piece and it really pissed me off. This quote from Gillian Flynn is apt here: "I get a bit piqued when people say, 'I don't really like that kind of book.' It's akin to marking yourself as proudly poorly read."

I'm not upset or excited. I'm not on a "side". Please don't tell me I need to chill the fuck out.

But...it did go over well...I'm mystified by those taking offense at this.

I get your point, but it's a poor analogy. Colleges that have campaigns geared towards teaching people not to rape rather than just towards teaching people to keep themselves safe have decreased their rates of sexual assaults. It IS possible to educate people about consent and to prevent potential rapists from raping.

While I think marlove is insane, I don't think fire as rapist is an apt metaphor. Fire is a mindless thing; rapist is a human being choosing to violate other human beings.

The term "fly-over" states is just so patronizing and snobby. It is shitty for people to act like corn-fed Midwesterners are the only true Americans, but it's not better to act like everything between NY and LA is a waste of space populated by hicks.

Ohhh duh, thank you. I didn't even look at it. I kept reading his/her post and was like, am I missing something? Have I been spelling bizarre wrong all these years?
