Just tried it out. XFCE is nice. I like it better than Unity but I couldn't get compiz and emerald working. Compiz worked fine after installing the proprietary nVidia drivers. I've used XFCE before. I guess I never thought that they followed the release schedule so stringently. I will definitely have a look since the Ubuntu install of 12.04 is just wasting space.

I installed 12.04 and hate it. I liked 11.04 in that you could revert back to the classic gnome but in 12.04 you are forced to use Unity desktop. If I do install Ubuntu for anything other than maintenance then I will likely go back to 10.10.
