Right click then unlock the taskbar. Then right click the shortcuts and click unpin from startmenu. You should be able to unpin them without unlocking the taskbar. If they are on the far right then you can only hide them.

For channels that output in true HD the bars are there to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio intact so you don't have to keep switching your tv from stretched to standard mode.

Transmission isn't getting as many votes as uTorrent because there isn't as high of a user base for Linux and Mac. I use uTorrent when I'm booted into Windows but Transmission is so much easier, unobtrusive, sleek, and rich.
