I got rid of the panels and just mapped {WIN}+space to the Gmenu on Cairo-dock to bring the menu up wherever the mouse is. Doesn't solve the moving around but you don't have to go to the panel to get it.

Nice article! I never would have thought of it like that. Though it seems like cochlear implants are similar where patients aren't able to focus on one sound unless it is considerably louder than the background noise. This is why there is an on/off switch on these types of implants.
