From a historical perspective though, everything's important, even/especially the mediocre shit. It gives you a fuller picture of the culture of an era than just the masterpieces would.

Joel is more like an old-timey movie host, in the tradition of Zacherley, Svengoolie, whatever local car dealer they'd get to show the all-night movie, etc. He's got a paternal slant and is explicitly the Bots' "dad" figure. Plus he's just kind of pleasantly weird.
