Except biologically it doesn’t work like that. There are many things that can increase your levels that are not alcohol. Sugar free energy drinks. Mouth wash. Hand sanitizer, certain types of food. On top of it all, the tests are EXTREMELY unreliable. You could blow 5 different times and get 5 different numbers, then

An experienced officer can accurately estimate someone’s BAC just based on your eyes

you have to pay the prosecutors, admin staff, police

Guilty until proven innocent” is how it works now, right?

Freedom >< Security
So every liberty you are willing to give up, you can be more safe.
Most people don’t want to be kept under big brothers thumb in a dystopia,
even if it means some folks have to die for the freedom.
i know that may sound harsh, especially to anyone who’s lost a loved one in an accident, especially if

If this breathalyzer ignition system was anything like what police use, no, that wouldn’t work. Simply based off of the volume and pressure of air that is required. You have to use a fairly forceful exhale, and keep it going for longer than you’d think you need to.

Where I live they will get you for anything *below* .08 and call it “Driving While Impaired”.

.09 is not bad, it’s about 2 beers in an hour by a 175 lb male. And I’m going go there - After drinking 2 beers in an hour, I can drive much better than someone who is texting or looking at their cell phone.

In that case, let’s just make the speed limit 15, and we’d save hundreds of thousands of lives.

I am not sure I agree with that. When I had to pay a ticket, the actual infraction was minimal, but all of the B.S. fees added on top of it were what nearly tripled the cost. This was over 15 years ago so I cannot remember exactly what they were, but at the time I was in awe how they figured out ways to generate more

Now this is very incorrect. Dui brings in significant revenue.

Oh yeah, it was meant as sarcasm. The “if it saves one life” logic is absurd. There are a million better ways to save one life. Hell, there are better ways to prevent DUIs per dollar spent than a checkpoint.

Hey, let’s just put a system in every car that makes it shut down and impounds itself if it ever goes more than 2 mph over the speed limit, or automated machine gun turrets that shoot anyone under the influence of drugs. Think of all the imaginary lives that could be saved with zero tolerance systems!

You just had to derail things by bringing the facts into it

That’s like saying that shooting every bear has the chance of saving at least 1 life that could be lost.

Ummm New York state law REQUIRES that DWI checkpoints are publicly posted ahead of time. Both time and place.

Those numbers seem impressive until you realize they don’t differentiate between 0.06 and impaired or 0.09 and not impaired at all. Like photo radar, this is about revenue not traffic safety.

I’m all for reporting a driver that’s noticeably impaired but stopping every single car that goes down a street on the off chance of catching the odd guy that’s 0.09 is bullshit.

Drunk driving is bad, but DUI checkpoints are just frickin’ revenue generators.

I got to drive one at an auto-x event a while back. The two things it has going for it are power on boost and super quick steering. I seriously wanted that steering ratio in all my cars after driving it. That being said, the actual handling dynamics felt like driving a hatchback, which is not the kind of feeling I
