Personally, the Paperwhites are easy on the eyes. The first gen was a a drabby whitish/off-white light and the ink didn’t have enough contrast. Of course, that’s relative ‘coz I only realized the difference once I saw the new gen.

If you want, you could easily upgrade it with Amazon’s trade-in feature that had some deals recently. I shifted up from a PW 1st gen using that promo.
