Something I’ve noticed is that the supposed “house style” takes on new elements with each writer/director. With Whedon it got snappier and more ensemble-based; with Gunn it got more vibrant and irreverent; with Waititi it got dryer. It’s like a creative Katamari.

I am a life long comic book nerd but up until a few years ago if someone said “The Eternals” I would say “Who?”. 

That and all his subsequent films. And I say that as someone who likes Southland Tales more than most.

The extended cut of Donnie Darko proved pretty conclusively that the absolute last thing we want is Richard Kelly further expanding on its “universe”.

Honestly,   I have heard some interviews he has done in the last decade where he just tells show biz stories and I feel like that should be what he does now.  He has so many amazing stories about the industry and is an amazing story teller
