It’s a highly individualized line. “Screw canon” means sequels shouldn’t bother with the movies that created them and larger storytelling between different projects should just be ignored.

Only at the level of say, going to a website known for frequently posting ‘spoiler’ content and being upset at the content including spoilers.

Nothing against either of MacFarlane’s shows, but I think for the most part they had his name on them, and people just stopped thinking about them further. They haven’t really had any major controversial moments or press coverage that I’ve ever seen that would put the behind-the-scenes stuff out front.
